Air pollution in urban environments poses a growing health risk to people and other living beings. Eos is a research project exploring how wind and solar energy could be used to capture harmful airborne microparticles and improve urban air quality. Designed as a streetlight, Eos combines lighting and filtration in a familiar urban form, allowing environmental technology to integrate more seamlessly into everyday public space.

Turning Heat into Airflow

Visualizing Pain Thresholds

The goal for Eos was to minimize energy consumption while maintaining effective air filtration. Using the solar chimney principle, heat from the sun naturally generates airflow through the system. As warm air rises through the base and solar dome, it passes through an electrostatic filter that captures harmful airborne particulates. This reduces the need for more power-intensive filtration systems such as conventional HEPA filters.

The chimney itself is insulated with a transparent layer which insulates while also harnessing the green house effect.

Insulated Chimney

The electrostatic filter acts as an extremely low pressure filter which captures Microparticles using static electricity.

Electrostatic Filter

The solar dome acts as a secondary heat chamber, capturing naturally occurring solar energy. A solar tracking fresnels lens amplifies the heat in the chamber for more intense airflow.

Solar Dome

The solar base acts as the primary heat chamber and is equipped with metal tubes that retain the solar heat even after sunset, boosting the performance of the system.

Solar Base

The chimney fan boosts upward airflow by harnessing wind power. It has a waterproof construction to prevent water leaking into the system.

Visualizing Pain Thresholds

By combining multiple strategies to harness both solar and wind energy, Eos significantly reduces its reliance on external grid power, which is already under pressure in many cities around the world. This allows the system to operate more independently while keeping overall energy consumption low.

Visualizing Pain Thresholds

The integrated electrostatic filter features a fully replaceable and easily serviceable modular architecture. As Eos captures particulates over time, maintenance is required depending on the level of buildup. When a filter reaches the end of its service cycle, it can be quickly removed and replaced by the local municipality.

Visualizing Pain Thresholds

When the sun goes down, Eos functions as a streetlight, illuminating roads, public squares, cycling lanes, and highways. Its integrated LED system provides balanced 360-degree illumination, allowing the same structure to support public lighting after dark while continuing to serve as part of the broader urban environment.

Visualizing Pain Thresholds

During the design process of Eos, significant attention was given to developing an internal architecture that supported the functional requirements of the solar chimney while maintaining balanced proportions and a coherent exterior form. The resulting layout was refined to guide airflow efficiently without compromising the overall visual simplicity.
